Between its consistently high economic rankings, expanding economy and burgeoning thought leader status, Ohio has reshaped itself in the past decade. Columbus alone was ranked as the seventh most intelligent city in the nation in 2013 and 2014, and recently named the second best city for young job seekers.
The flip side to these awesome accolades is that every city faces crime challenges. While statistics can’t tell the whole story, it’s important to take a look at the numbers to see where we were, how far we’ve come and how far we’ve yet to go. Overall, the most recently available numbers compared with years’ past reports are promising. Take a look below to see where Ohio’s crime rates stand.
The Ohio Law Enforcement Agency Uniform Crime Reportrecorded the following statistics for Ohio crime in 2007:
- Violent crime – 39,360
- Property crime – 396,209
- Murder – 516
- Forcible rape – 4,452
- Robbery – 18,260
- Aggravated assault – 16,132
- Burglary – 98,508
- Larceny theft – 263,922
- Vehicle theft – 33,779
The most recent report from 2012 shows some interesting progress:
- Violent crime – 34,595
- Property crime – 359,883
- Murder – 495
- Forcible rape – 3,658
- Robbery – 15,235
- Aggravated assault – 15,207
- Burglary – 103,421
- Larceny theft – 236,950
- Vehicle theft – 19,512
As you can see, the good news is that every crime, other than burglary, has decreased between 2007 and 2012. What’s more, murder decreased by one percent and rape decreased by 0.6 percent between 2011 and 2012. It’s not a huge change in numbers, but it’s going in the right direction.
When the 2013 numbers come in, we’ll post another report, so come back and check our blog often.
